What happens when you get heartburn?

Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart, but when it occurs, you may feel a burning sensation in your chest rising up to your throat. You may also have a sour taste in your mouth. Also known as acid reflex, heartburn is harmless; however it can be painful and cause discomfort, especially at night.

Why does heartburn occur?

As your little one grows, he may push your stomach and its acids upwards and towards the esophagus.Additionally, the increase of the hormone progesterone during pregnancy also causes the muscle that separates your esophagus from your stomach to relax. This results in digestive juices or acids to back up and creep upwards, irritating your esophagus lining and producing that unpleasant feeling of heartburn.

How can you ease heartburn?

Making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can cut down on the risk of heartburn. If you continue to be troubled by heartburn, discuss your condition with your doctor who may recommend medication to ease the symptoms.

Eat:

  • Eat smaller meals spread throughout the day and enjoy your meals slowly.

  • Monitor your diet and avoid foods that may trigger heartburn, often spicy foods and caffeine.

Do:

  • Stay upright after you eat. Instead of lying down after a meal, why not go for a walk? It can aid digestion.

  • Sleep in an elevated position. Prop your head and chest up with some pillows to prevent acid reflux at night.
